Covert Cupid ’17 Fanfic: Mindy

Note: This entry is part of this year’s Covert Cupid challenge, in which each host drew three characters from a hat and used them to write a romantic fanfiction short. You can hear them all read aloud in Episode 80 of the podcast.

It had to be a Christmas movie. Of course it had to be a Christmas movie. I strongly suspected foul play, but, when I watched the video of the Heat Miser’s song… it was actually pretty cute.
This was certainly a tough one for me — I wasn’t too familiar with any of the characters, and at first, they seemed to have absolutely nothing whatsoever in common.

Ultimately, though, I couldn’t resist the idea of matching up two sort-of-supervillains who each had a kind of creepy crack team of minions, however bizarre the pairing seemed to be. And as for Leela, well, who better to pop randomly and inexplicably into a story than a Doctor Who companion?

And, um… I love fondue. Don’t you?

I hope you enjoy the story! -Mindy

I had seen maybe one episode of Deadwood, ages ago, and I had NO memory whatsoever of Calamity Jane (except for the actual historical figure). Happily, in my research viewings of the show, I immediately glommed onto her as my favorite character, and though I didn’t quite make it to the end of season 1 I felt like I had a handle on her. My one regret is not watching far enough to see her enter a romantic relationship with another WOMAN on the show—I suddenly felt rather like I was straight-washing Jane, but Karen and Caitlin reassured me that Jane is almost certainly meant to be bi. Still, if I were to do it over again, I might have shuffled the pairing—or at the least, smoothed out the narrative tone of the whole thing.

At least this particular instance of an underaged character was as easily solved as changing his uniform color. –Liz

I know what you’re thinking.
Karen! How the hell did you manage to get Ninja Turtle characters for the last two fic challenges?!?
And honestly? I have no freakin’ clue how that happened, but I’m sure as hell not complaining.

Okay, that’s not entirely true, because this fic was wicked hard, guys.
Like…way harder than I thought it was going to be when I was still basking in the afterglow of my good luck.
April is mostly a blank slate regardless of source canon, and so having her be down for a little girl-on-girl wasn’t going to take a ginormous stretch in logic.
And Xena? Please. Have you ever SEEN Xena?

No, the problems surfaced when I realized I couldn’t write Xena in love with anyone that wasn’t Gabrielle. And believe me, I tried.

So what you get instead is a tale of high adventure and longing that is chock full of TMNT Volume 1 Easter Eggs.
I’m so proud of myself, I could spit.

I went into this fan fic only knowing who one of the characters was; having a vague notion about the fandom of another; and having never even remotely heard of the third. Because of this, there was extensive wiki reading to find out whatever I could about the unknowns, and I ultimately realized I could make basically my entire fic one big lead up to a solid punchline. I hope you will enjoy it, as I was ultimately pretty pleased with and amused by it.

Bottle Match Fanfic Challenge: Karen

by Karen

Words cannot possibly describe how stoked I was to get this particular assignment. I mean, come on, how could I NOT be excited about this? It’s my jam. My wheelhouse. The school to which I am currently enrolled!
I had the basic gist of the plot shortly after we were done recording the draw, but…then found myself stifled a bit. Something so easy was surprisingly difficult to get started with, add to that the fact that it involved combat which I am no where near experienced at writing.
If I’m honest, I’m still not entirely satisfied with how this turned out, and given my druthers I would tweak it a bit further, but I’m pleased with it none-the-less.
(And I kind of want to write something up about where the other brothers are and what they’re up to, but that’ll have to wait until after I do the prequel/sequel to my Covert Cupid story from last spring.)
